7 TRAITS OF TRULY AUTHENTIC PEOPLE

Before I get into the traits of authentic people, I want to start by describing what an “authentic person” is. Authentic people don’t care about fads or trends. They dance to the beat of their own drum instead of following the crowd.

They are the same person in every situation and don’t change who they are based on who they’re with or what they’re doing. They’re genuine and original.

So, why isn’t everyone authentic? One reason is FEAR!

Fear of what someone will think of them.

Fear that they won’t be liked or accepted or popular if they do, or don’t do, something.

Fear that people will make fun of them or think they’re weird or stupid.

Another reason is for self-gain. Think about the salesman who puts on a big act to convince you that what they’re selling is the best thing since sliced bread.

Or the manipulator who is nice to you until they get what they want, then they leave you.

If you would like to be a more authentic person yourself, start incorporating these 7 traits into your life:

1. Indulge in your curiosities

Be curious about things you are told. Be curious about what you hear and see. Don’t accept anything as the “one and only truth.”

2. Speak your mind

You’re hurting yourself if you are holding back what you want to say because you’re afraid of the reaction you’ll get.

You need to speak your truths and be heard. This doesn’t mean that you need to always say how you feel, especially when it will be hurtful to someone else.

Rather, find one space where you can honestly and openly communicate. Maybe it’s a journal, maybe it’s a close friend, or maybe it’s a support group.

I personally am a big fan of writing, support groups, and coffee dates with friends!

3. Spend time alone

Spending time alone is a great way to get to know yourself – your feelings, your thoughts and your beliefs.

When we are constantly surrounding ourselves with other people, it is nearly impossible to know what our own beliefs are.

So, make time for yourself. Meditate. Go for walks by yourself. Get to know yourself by being with yourself.[the_ad id=”9782″]

4. Accept the fact that not everyone will like you

You don’t like everyone you meet for one reason or another. Conversely, not everyone who meets you will like you.

So, stop trying to be everyone’s friend by being a chameleon who changes colors depending on your environment.

It’s impossible to make everyone like you. So, stop trying and just be yourself!

5. Know what’s motivating you

This is something that authentic people do on a regular basis. If you don’t understand your motive for doing something, your ego can run amok.

Authentic people ask this question of themselves: Is our motivation one that is true to who we are, or is it ruled by a need for approval? So, check in with what your motivation is often.

6. Listen to your gut

If something feels wrong, there’s a reason. If something doesn’t feel right, there’s probably some truth to that. Our bodies are intelligent and can sense when something isn’t right for us.

Pay attention to your gut feelings and trust that your intuition is onto something.

7. Never apologize for who you are

Authentic people don’t apologize for who they are. We are the person we were created to be.

When we apologize for who we are or what we love, we send the message to ourselves, and to others, that we are not something is wrong with us and we need to be “fixed.”
